Candor celebrates over 100 Year Old Independence Day Traditions.

By AJ Bush, Fox 40 News.
Over hundreds of residents in the Town of Candor celebrated Independence Day with their Fourth of July parade and town barbeque, Wednesday.

First begun in 1889, Candor's annual celebration is one of the oldest parades in the Southern Tier. And having so many festivities over the years, generations of families enjoyed the same traditions their forefathers did before them. "I used to come to the parade with my mother and father. Then it's my wife and I, then my kids and grand kids. And now today, I have a great granddaughter here," said Douglas Fessenden. Fessenden added he marched in the Candor parade when he was boy scout in the 1940's, and had been attending it before that.

And even though the town's population rests around 800 people, locals say their small town adds a certain charm to the occasion. "People are more 'homely' people, they're like family. We know a lot of people that are here," said Stan White and Brent Doane, Candor residents and parade marshals. And much like many residents that spoke to Fox 40, Stan and Brent said they hope Candor will continue to celebrate the Fourth of July the one way they know how, steeped in tradition.
