There will be events every month celebrating the 200th year of the Town of Candor. Check out our calendar to see future events! As part of the Town of Candor’s celebration, the Candor Historical Society is conducting a series of “Historic Talks” that follow the progression of growth of the town.
The first talk in February by Society President Milton Dougherty covered the formation of the Town from European discovery of the North American continent to the “setting aside” of Candor’s boundaries in 1811. The second talk in the series will continue Candor’s history by focusing on the hearty pioneers that moved into the area and settled in the Town.
This talk will be presented by Nancy Ward Riggs who, as a direct descendent of one of the original families, has researched the background of many of the first settlers. In a power point presentation Riggs will show how rapidly the town population increased, where the settlers came from and the interconnection of some of the families.
Utilizing her teaching background and information she developed for local history lessons for her students she will show examples of how early inhabitants were able to build structures for living and working on previously unsettled land.
This “Historic Talk” will be given on April 27th at 7:00PM at the Candor Fire Hall. It is free and open to the public with refreshments being served after the talk. Historical Society fund raising items will be available for purchase. Town Historian Carol Henry will also have her most recent book, “Town of Candor – Yesterday and Today” and the Bicentennial Calendar, available.
For more information contact Historical Society President Milton Dougherty at mhdough@frontiernet.net or 659-7357.
The Candor Community Showcase was a great success! Held on March 26 at the Candor Fire Department, over 30 businesses and organizations showcased their wares. While outside, Doug’s Fish Fry was on hand to serve food.
Door prizes and raffles were held throughout the day. Members of the public were able to visit with area businesses and organizations to learn what they have to offer. Many of the businesses and organizations promised to be back next year.
The Balloon Man was on hand to entertain children and the first fifty ladies in the door received daffodils.
Even more participation is planned for next year.
